PARA PROFESSIONAL

JOB SUMMARY

A Para Professional will provide the direct educational activities and care of students enrolled in the Pier Learning Center Education program.  Specific educational activities and supports will be described in Individual Education Plans, (IEP), and Mid-Step policy and procedures. 

 

MAIN DUTIES

  1. Client Protections:
  1. Students are not to be subjected to physical, verbal, sexual, or psychological abuse or punishment (e.g., adherence to approve student management techniques).
    1. Students are to be free from unnecessary restraint (e.g., employ graded levels of intervention).
    1. Students are to be provided with the opportunity for personal privacy (e.g., personal care).
    1. Students have the right to retain personal possessions and property.  (e.g., Personal possessions are removed only per control and discipline policy or individual programs).
    1. Follow all policy and procedures that prohibit mistreatment, neglect, or abuse of students  (e.g., report all instances or suspected instances).

II.            Training:

  1. Participate in all training that enables performance of duties effectively, efficiently, and competently (e.g., staff meetings, orientation inservices).
    1.  Demonstrate the skills and techniques necessary to administer interventions to manage the inappropriate behavior of students (e.g., proper student management, no over use or reliance on reprimands and/or negative statements).
    1. Demonstrate the skills necessary to implement the individual educational plans for each student.

III.           Educational Process:

  1. The schedule is implemented as written (e.g., classroom schedules, standard training procedures).
    1. Participate in the development of individual student educational plans.
    1. Participate in the interdisciplinary team process (e.g., includes effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and staff).
    1. Students IEP teacher is implemented as written.
    1. Significant student events are documented and student response as specified in individual and group programs is documented (e.g., progress notes, logs, behavior management logs, and program data sheets/cards).
    1. Routinely intervenes on self-injurious or any other potentially injurious behavior.
    1. Uses correct tones when interacting with students and staff.
    1. All interaction is age appropriate.
    1. Promote growth through all phases of daily living by taking advantage of training opportunities.
    1. Encourage student to demonstrate maximum independence by requiring the student to perform daily living tasks with minimal prompting unless indicated otherwise in their individual program.

IV.          Client Behavior and Facility Practices:

  1. Demonstrate policies and procedures for management of student behavior.
    1. Use only facility approved interventions in the management of student behavior (e.g., student management techniques, control and discipline manual).

V.           Active Treatment:

  1. Demonstrate the skills and techniques necessary to administer interventions to manage the inappropriate behavior of clients (proper consumer management, no over use of reliance on reprimands and/or negative statements).
    1. Consumers individual program plan is implemented as written.
    1. Participate in the interdisciplinary team process (includes effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and staff).
    1. Significant consumer events are documented and consumer response as specified in individual and group programs is documented  (e.g. process notes shift logs, behavior management logs, and program data sheets/cards).
    1. Routinely intervenes on self-injurious or any other potentially injurious behavior.
    1. Use correct voice tones with interacting with consumers and staff.
    1. All interaction is age appropriate.
    1. Promote growth through all phases of daily living by taking advantage of training opportunities.

VI.          Physical Environment/Health:

  1. Ensure student environment is furnished and maintained in good repair (e.g., requests for maintenance).
    1. Ensure that staff are familiar with the emergency plans/procedures.
    1. Ensure that students and staff are provided a sanitary environment through proper infection control procedures.
    1. Ensure a safe educational environment is maintained by following established policies and procedures.
    1. Ensure that students are provided food at appropriate temperature, amount, and are provided utensils as specified.
    1. Ensure student cleanliness.
    1. Ensure reporting of illness/injury.
    1. Ensure students are treated with respect and dignity.
    1. Ensure staff maintains proper student appearance.
    1. Ensure staff provides adequate/proper assistance in student self-care.
    1. Assist/monitor all pertinent areas of self-care.

VII.         Training

  1. Participate in all training that enables performance of duties effectively, efficiently, and competently (e.g. – staff meetings, orientation, in-services, etc.).
    1. Demonstrate the skills and techniques necessary to administer interventions to manage the inappropriate behavior of consumers (proper client management, no over use or reliance on reprimands and/or negative statements).
    1. Demonstrate the skills necessary to implement the individual program plans for each consumer.

VIII.       General Process:

  1. Maintain confidentiality of students, student records, and conferences.
    1. Implement company policies/procedures as specified.
    1. Maintain lines of communication.
    1. Develop, maintain, and foster positive training environment between staff and consumers.
    1. Participate in other activities as assigned or directed.
    1. Maintain a neat/clean appearance to serve as an appropriate role model.
    1. Work daily schedule, reporting for work on time (e.g., complete requests for time off, appropriate use of time card).
    1. Ensure staff interacts appropriately with consumers according to policies and procedures set forth by Mid-Step Services and serve as appropriate role models.

 

 QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  2. Must have a valid driver’s license.
  3. Possess ability to speak and read English.
  4. Must be able to write legibly.
  5. Must have no restrictions on ability to lift.
  6. Must be approved to work by the Iowa Department of Human Services if one or more of the following exist:  prior convictions, child abuse registry report, and/or dependent adult abuse registry report.
  7. Must not be on Medicare/Medicaid fraud registry.
  8. Experience with working with targeted student preferred.
  9. Must pass pre-employment drug test.
  10. Individuals with blood borne pathogen diseases cannot be employed in any direct care position due to risk of disease exposure to our
